(Yahoo) – Following today’s season finale, the smash-hit Apple TV series Widow’s Bay went into slumber until Season Two. But, just like the church bells, Dale’s last line will continue to ring in our heads during the darkest hours of the night.
Katie Dippold’s breakout hit about a cursed island and its quirky inhabitants is one of those shows that feels almost too good to be true. The veteran screenwriter who first wrote Widow’s Bay as an episode of Parks and Recreation while writing and producing on the NBC sitcom has a supernatural ability to balance horror and comedy in equal measure without ever undercutting one for the sake of the other, and the wait for the recently announced Widow’s Bay Season Two will give us ample time to dissect how, exactly, Dippold pulled off one of the greatest cross-genre achievements of the streaming era.
First and foremost among the qualities that makes Widow’s Bay such a peerless success in the horror-comedy space is the show’s seemingly endless supply of well-written, well-acted and immediately memorable supporting characters, a phenomenon we highlighted when Chris Fleming graced the series with their presence in the episode “What To Expect On Your Trip.”
Nowhere in today’s finale, “We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time!” was that strength more apparent than in the performance of Emmy-winning writer and comedian Jeff Hiller, whose character Dale uncovered the island’s dark secret and let loose a blood-curdling scream with comedic timing to rival any Amy Poehler vehicle.
